About the class
General Information: Int 1 is a one unit, Pass/No Pass course designed to teach the nature of research and the role of the library in the research process. Your assignments and quizzes are based on this online tutorial, http://www.library.ucsb.edu/learn.
The syllabus and tutorial are available on this site and it will be your responsibility to check this site for changes to the schedule and syllabus.

Evaluation of resources is an important component of this course. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on practice, and open discussion, you will be introduced to general research skills including topic development, search strategies, and evaluation of resources.

Computing Facilities As an Int 1 student, you have access to the Instructional Computing (IC) classroom labs in Phelps Hall this quarter to complete your assignments. Use your UCSBnetId and enter "Int 1" and the name of your instructor when the dialog box prompts you. Hours are posted outside the IC labs and online at http://www.ic.ucsb.edu/students/labs/. Please be aware that computing facilities in the libraries are limited so plan accordingly when you have assignments to do. |
GradingSo you can track your progress, I award a letter grade for each assignment.
The grade of P (Pass) is assigned for coursework equivalent to a C or higher.
The grade of NP (No Pass) is assigned for coursework equivalent to a D or
higher.

Final Project 1. Your final project is an annotated bibliography (list of references) on a topic of your choice.
Here is a sample.
2. Your project should include an Annotated Bibliography with these items:
- Your research statement
- Book
- Web site (corporate or an organization--not a magazine or newspaper)
- Magazine or Journal article (found through our databases)
- Newspaper article from either an electronic source or print (found through our databases)
Please feel free to include other materials in your project that you thought were helpful to you during this project. For more information about annotated bibliographies, see this site at Cornell University.
3. Your bibliography should be formatted using the MLA style. This page from Dartmouth University gives examples of the different formats.
4. This project is due June 4, 2007. E-mail submissions are welcome. |
